Interface Design Patterns

Darryl Chantry presented on User Interface Design patterns at Tech Ed. The patterns he covered were –

  • Introspection
  • Systems: i.e We should think about designs for the whole system, not just the product. He gave the example of the IPod, which Apple did not deisgn as a separate product, but how it was part of a much larger experience that included iTunes, buying online music and syncing.
  • Invisibility: How the systems that people do not notice are actually quite good. (He used the example of the room temperature – no body complains if it is perfect, but notice it immediately if it is not)
  • Predictability: How users prefer things to work in a certain way and are confused if they are not.
